Since it is the first-generation technology, the strategy was quite aggressive. The computer logic in the early 2008 6.4 trucks (often referred to as "Job 1" builds) prioritizes heat generation above everything else. To keep the DPF clean, the engine dumps excessive amounts of raw diesel into the cylinders during the exhaust stroke.
Result? Much of the fuel isn't used on moving the truck forward, but being used as an incinerator to burn off trapped soot. This is why 2008 owners often report seeing flames or extreme heat from the tailpipe during these cycles.
Back Pressure & Pumping Loss
Fuel economy is all about how hard the engine has to work to push exhaust out. Imagine trying to jog while breathing through a straw -- that is how your engine breathes with a restricted exhaust system.
On one hand, as the ceramic filter traps soot, it creates a physical wall in the exhaust stream, which will increase back pressure.
What is back pressure? Back pressure is anything that resist exhaust gas from escaping. When combustion happens, the cylinder has much higher pressure than the outside atmosphere, so exhaust gases naturally want to escape. Back pressure resists this flow, and that resistance forces the engine to work harder, reducing efficiency and power. That’s why, fundamentally, back pressure is always a negative.
On the other hand, pumping loss also plays a critical role in poor fuel economy. The piston must use valuable energy (torque) to force the exhaust gas past this restriction. This energy should have gone to your wheels, but instead, it was wasted on overcoming resistance.
It's All About Flow Optimization...
To move from 8-10 MPG back to a respectable 15-18 MPG, the mechanical restriction must be addressed. Transitioning to an optimal flow exhaust system will change the physics of the engine operation. Keep in mind that flow optimization includes finding a “sweet spot” in exhaust. If the pipe diameter is too small, you get excessive back pressure, which hurts performance. If it’s too large, you lose gas velocity, which weakens scavenging and also reduces performance. The ideal setup balances low restriction with sufficient velocity, and this balance is achieved through proper pipe diameter and length, often tuned for a specific RPM range. You will also gain lowers EGTs since heat evacuates the engine bay faster and more freely, reducing the thermal load on the cooling system.
