A shop quotes a new DPF. Then you find an ad for a few hundred dollars to clean one. It is tempting to think the choice is easy.
First ask: does the cleaning price start with your truck in the bay, or with the filter already on a bench? That one detail can explain much of the gap.
How much does DPF cleaning cost?
These are public U.S. service prices checked on October 23, 2026. They are examples, not a national average or a quote for your truck. Confirm the current price and scope before booking.
| Provider and region | Posted price | What the price describes |
|---|---|---|
| PDX DPF Cleaning, Oregon | $1,500–$2,000 | Pickup-truck removal and full-service cleaning. Confirm the full job scope and any added parts. |
| DPF Discounter, Canton, Ohio | From $350 per filter | Professional filter cleaning. Confirm pickup-filter acceptance and what labor, shipping and tests cost extra. |

Get a written installed quote for both paths. A new DPF’s cost depends on the exact assembly. Ask for the part number, included sections, labor and any core deposit. “Replace the DPF” is too vague to compare with another shop’s bill.
When is cleaning worth it, and when should you replace?
| Test finding | Best next step |
|---|---|
| Bad pressure data or a damaged pressure line. | Repair the sensing fault first. You have not yet proved the filter needs work. |
| Soot load that the truck can safely regenerate. | Fix the cause, then use the approved regen process if permitted. |
| Ash restriction in a sound, reusable filter. | Ask about the approved cleaning method and a written pass/fail report. |
| A cracked or melted core. | Replace the filter and find the cause of damage. Cleaning will not mend the core. |
| Oil or coolant inside the filter. | Fix the leak and check the maker’s reuse rules before spending on cleaning. |
| The filter fails the required test after cleaning. | Ask for the failed result and the replacement options. Do not pay for “better” without a pass. |
Cummins’ DPF inspection guide identifies cracked or melted filters as replacement cases. Its rules apply to the covered Cummins systems. Have the shop use the reuse rules for your specific pickup.
Regen and ash cleaning are different jobs
A regen burns soot. It does not burn away ash. But ash that survives regen may still be removed by a suitable cleaning process. “Regen did not fix it” does not prove that cleaning cannot work.
Cummins’ ash-cleaning bulletin explains that cleaning methods differ in how well they remove packed or bonded ash. Do not pick a method from its name alone. Ask whether it is approved for your filter and how the shop proves the result.
Skip the garden-hose or pressure-washer experiment. This is a job for a trained service that can handle the waste, dry the filter and test it.
Compare both quotes line by line
- Diagnosis: What proved the filter needs service?
- Removal and install: Is all labor included? What happens if bolts or clamps break?
- Cleaning or the new assembly: What exact service or part is on the quote?
- Extras: Include seals, clamps, shipping, tax and any core charge.
- Retest: Who checks the truck after the filter goes back on?
- Failed cleaning: What do you owe if the filter is rejected?
- Time without the truck: When is pickup promised, and what could delay it?
Check coverage before approving the bill. Ask the dealer to check your VIN for applicable warranty coverage or a service program. Do this before authorizing work that could affect a claim. Get the answer in writing.
A cost example that shows where the risk sits
Example only, not market pricing: Say your written cleaning quote is $1,600 installed. The replacement quote is $3,200 installed. Both cover the same work, and diagnosis found no engine repair to add.
If cleaning passes, the difference is $1,600. But what if the filter fails? Ask whether the first bill stops, is partly credited or stacks on top of replacement. Do not count a refundable core deposit as a final cost if you meet the return terms.
For a work truck, add the cost of a rental or missed work separately. A low repair bill is less useful if the truck sits for a week with no firm return date.
What should the cleaning report show?
Ask for more than a “cleaned” sticker. The report should match the filter that came off your truck.
- Filter ID: Part number and a serial number or shop tracking number.
- Condition: Damage, oil or coolant found before cleaning.
- Test results: Flow or pressure values before and after, with units and test conditions.
- The pass limit: The rule used and whether this filter passed it.
“Flow improved by 80%” sounds good, but it does not tell you whether the filter passed. Ask for the final result against the stated limit. A bench test also does not replace the truck’s required leak, code and pressure checks after install.
Do not put a serviced filter back behind an unfixed engine fault
If the truck is burning oil, losing coolant or making excess soot, filter service is only part of the repair. Ask the shop what caused the load or damage and what test shows that cause is fixed.
Our oil consumption and DPF life guide explains what to check when oil use is part of the problem.
This is where paying for diagnosis can save a second removal bill. A cleared dash light alone does not answer that question.
Check the pipe behind the DPF while it is in the shop
Before pickup, ask for a look at the rear exhaust pipes, joints and hangers. If the pipe is rusted through or a joint is damaged, you can price that work at the same visit. Ask whether the jobs share any labor rather than assuming they do.
A DPF-back system replaces piping after the filter and leaves the DPF in place. It is an option for worn rear piping, not a fix for ash, a cracked filter or a sensor fault.
2011–2016 Ford F-250/F-350/F-450 6.7L Powerstroke pickups: Compare the 4-inch DPF-back option below. It is not listed for Cab & Chassis models. Check body dimensions, joints and material choice before ordering.

[[product-recommend:2]]Both options offer T304 and T409 material choices. Compare the full installed price and the fitment notes with your shop. Keep this optional pipe work separate from the filter-service quote so you can choose each job on its own.
FAQ
Q: How long will a cleaned DPF last?
A: There is no fixed mileage promise for every truck. Ask for the pass report and warranty, then track the result during normal use. Engine health and duty cycle still matter.
Q: Does a successful regen mean the DPF is clean?
A: It shows the burn cycle finished. It does not prove ash is gone or that the filter core is sound.
Q: Is an on-truck chemical clean the same as removing the filter?
A: No. Ask what the service removes, whether the maker allows it and how the result is tested. Do not compare the two by price alone.
Q: Should I replace a high-mileage filter just to be safe?
A: Use the inspection and test results. Mileage alone does not show whether the core is damaged or whether approved cleaning can restore it.
