What Is LMM EGR Delete Kit?

The 2007.5-2010 Duramax LMM builds on the LBZ's emissions stack and adds a NOx adsorber catalyst to meet the tighter standard, and that stacked-up hardware is hard on the engine. This guide explains what an LMM Duramax EGR delete kit is, how the LMM's emissions network is laid out, the 2026 legal picture, what a complete egr delete kit includes, how to install it, and the tradeoffs to weigh.

An LMM Duramax EGR delete kit is a block-off package that seals the exhaust and intake ports the factory EGR cooler and valve used to occupy. It includes block-off plates, a coolant bypass tube, and the hardware to cap the open passages so coolant keeps circulating. By physically removing the EGR cooler and valve, you stop soot from re-entering the intake, end the cracked-cooler coolant leaks, and let the engine breathe clean air. Some kits add a high-flow intake elbow as well to restore the airflow the deleted passage used to block. Either kit achieves the same EGR removal.

LMM Duramax Emission System Architecture: What You're Working With

The LMM carries over the LBZ's 6.6L inline-six block but adds a NOx adsorber and a higher-capacity liquid-cooled EGR cooler. Exhaust gas is routed through the EGR cooler back into the intake manifold to lower combustion temperatures and cut NOx. A diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and a diesel particulate filter (DPF) handle the rest, with active regen injecting fuel to burn trapped soot.

The problem is where the EGR lives. The cooler sits low on the passenger side, fed by thin gas-side walls that cycle between ambient air and 1,000°F+ exhaust pulses every drive. Soot packs the gas side, carbon cakes the intake horn, and a cracked core dumps coolant straight into the intake. Because LMM engines run DPF regen more often on short trips, unburned fuel vapor can also wash the intake. An LMM Duramax EGR delete kit removes the cooler and valve entirely, so there is no cooler to crack, no valve to stick, and no soot path into the manifold.

Is LMM EGR Delete Kit Legal In 2026?

Short answer: No. Under the federal Clean Air Act, it is illegal for sale or use on any pollution-controlled motor vehicle operated on public roads, and the EPA and CARB can assess civil penalties for tampering. The underlying law did not change in 2026, and any truck you register and drive on public roads must keep its factory EGR, DPF, and DEF-related hardware in place.

For 2026, treat the kit as off-road and competition use only. Keep the factory EGR, DPF, and DEF hardware installed on any truck you register and drive on public roads, and confirm your state's inspection rules before modifying. The guidance here is written for owners maintaining dedicated off-road or race vehicles where these modifications are permitted. A proper off-road tune is also required, because the ECM will set codes and derate once the EGR signals drop to zero.

Why LMM Owners Consider an EGR Delete?

The LMM's EGR cooler is a well-documented weak point, and the failure pattern shows up on forums constantly. Three real owner headaches explain why an LMM Duramax EGR delete kit ends up in so many builds.

1. Coolant vanishes with no puddle — cracked cooler

"I now have a coolant leak on the rear engine, what's next to be replaced? The whole EGR?"— Gkarr22, DuramaxDiesels forum

LMM engine shares the LBZ/LMM cooler-crack weakness: a failed core bleeds coolant into the intake with no external leak, eventually risking head-gasket and hydrolock damage.

2. Carbon sludge chokes the intake and sticks the valve

"Obviously you'll need to reroute your PCV first or any cleaning will be in vain as more oil is sucked into the intake… The EGR should also be blocked or removed at this point as well."— MTL_Dmax, DuramaxForum

Soot plus CCV oil vapor forms sticky sludge in the intake horn, restricting airflow and stalling the EGR valve — cleaning only buys months before it rebuilds.

3. Stuck-open EGR bleeds boost and throws smoke

"I have added mpi twins, 40 over injectors, and removed the egr. With my new tune the truck feels strong but the longer I drive the truck the more white smoke I see!"— bondurch, efilive forum (LMM thread)

Remove the EGR without the right calibration will cause the truck runs rich and smokes, EGR delete only works clean with a matching off-road tune.

What A Complete LMM Duramax EGR Delete Kit Should Include

A complete LMM Duramax EGR delete kit seals every EGR port and keeps coolant flowing. The key choice is whether to add the high-flow intake elbow. The factory intake elbow on the LMM houses the EGR passage, so once the EGR is gone you are left with a dead, soot-prone pocket in the airflow. The without-intake kit is the budget path: block-off plates, coolant bypass tube, and hardware only — perfect if your factory elbow is sound and you just want the EGR gone. The with intake elbow pipe tube kit swaps that restrictive cast elbow for a high-flow piece, cleaning up airflow to the turbo and removing the carbon trap in one job. Use code DPF12 for 12% off.

Installation Overview For LMM EGR Delete Kit

The LMM EGR delete is a half-day job on a cold engine. Always disconnect both batteries first and let everything cool. The procedure below follows the dpfexhaust LMM/LBZ install guide (web steps plus the 35-step OS20048 PDF). Full references: step-by-step web guide and PDF instruction.

Step 1 — Clear the bay: Remove the air intake pipe, MAF sensor, and air box (pry the three grommets). Drop the resonator box and the intake heater-grid cover, then unplug the charge-back wire and the grid power wire so the intake is fully exposed.

Step 2 — Strip the intercooler piping: Unplug the connector on the intake heater grid, pull the plastic wire-way, and remove the forward cast intercooler section — five bolts plus a bottom bracket bolt — along with the small tube at the cast intake. Cover the flexible boot to keep coolant out.

Step 3 — Remove cooler and valve: Take out the four nuts and two bolts holding the main intake. Disconnect every EGR-cooler coolant line on the passenger side, unplug the two temperature sensors, then remove the cooler (six bolts) and the EGR valve (two bolts — keep one bolt for reinstall).

Step 4 — Install the delete: Fit the exhaust block-off plate with the factory gasket using two M8×20 and one M10×20 hex bolts, plus the bracket. Route the supplied U-shaped coolant tube between the two firewall ports the cooler used to feed. Bolt the new intake elbow (with-intake kits) or reinstall the stock elbow (without-intake kits) with its O-ring seated.

Step 5 — Reassemble, refill, tune: Reinstall the intake tube, resonator, and air box; plug the MAF back in. Refill coolant through the overflow bottle, reconnect the batteries, then flash your off-road tune BEFORE the first start. Start, check for leaks, and top off coolant. Without the tune the truck sets EGR codes and drops into reduced power.

Risks, Tradeoffs, And Responsible Use Of LMM EGR Delete Kit

What You Gain

An lmm duramax egr delete kit ends the cracked-cooler coolant loss, stops intake carbon sludge, and lets the engine breathe. Owners report quicker turbo spool, lower EGTs, and 1-3 MPG back on the highway. It is the permanent fix for a cooler that would otherwise fail again on schedule.

What to Watch

The kit is a defeat device — off-road and competition use only, never on a street-registered truck, and it may void your warranty. It does not disable diagnostics by itself; a proper off-road tune is mandatory or codes and derates remain. A coolant flush while the system is open is smart, and the with-intake elbow is worth it if you want max airflow. Verify your local emissions laws before modifying, and keep the factory parts if the truck ever returns to public-road use.
