LML Duramax EGR Symptoms, Delete Kit Legality, and EGR Delete Kits We Sell
A Duramax LML EGR delete kit is the fix many 2011–2016 GM 6.6L owners reach for when EGR starts causing trouble. This guide covers EGR warning signs, how the emissions stack is built, what the law says in 2026, what fellow owners did, LML EGR delete kits we sell, how to install, and the risks to weigh before you order.
EGR Symptoms & Where To Check
Insufficient Flow / P0401 Code: The EGR passage plugs from extended idling or low airflow, and cleaning the passages usually restores operation. One owner noted the fault is..."...caused from an exhaust leak from the up pipes but not usually after the turbocharger." r/Duramax
Loss Of Power / Turbo Symptoms: Oil or soot around the intake and hot-side pipes can mean the turbo or PCV is feeding junk into the compressor. It can feel like the truck has "no balls," and one reply warned..."...With that much oil I would say there's a good chance it's time for a new turbo." r/Duramax
Coolant Loss / Leaks: A failed EGR cooler or hose drops coolant; some owners only noticed occasional low-coolant after the delete. One reported..."...It had an internal leak and was burning coolant on top of the external hose leak..." r/Duramax
LML Duramax Emission System Architecture: What You're Working With
The 2011–2016 LML Duramax was the first GM 6.6L Duramax to pair its coolant-fed EGR cooler with a urea SCR/DEF system. Hot exhaust is pulled from the passenger side up-pipe, routed through the EGR cooler, then into the intake to dilute combustion heat and lower NOx.
So the truck carries an EGR cooler and valve, a combined DOC/DPF canister, an SCR catalyst, and a DEF tank. The EGR cooler fails most often when it leaks coolant internally (burned in the cylinders) or externally at the hose connections, while soot clogs the valve and intake.
LML EGR sits high on the driver's side and ties into the up-pipe and intake, a delete removes the cooler and valve and installs block-off plates. We recommend pairing it with a tune that disables EGR monitoring so the PCM does not set a soft-limp code.

Is a LML Duramax EGR Delete Kit Legal in 2026?
Short answer: No. A Duramax LML EGR delete kit is not street-legal for on-road use in the United States. The federal Clean Air Act makes it illegal to remove or disable any emissions control device, and the EPA's tampering enforcement has sharpened since 2020 through steady fines against parts sellers and installers. California (CARB) is stricter still, and several states now tie inspection to a visible, functioning EGR and DEF system.
Fixes Owners Recommend
Before buying a Duramax LML EGR delete kit, the r/Duramax community offers three tiers of fix:
- Clean First: Many owners restore operation by cleaning the EGR passages or cooler instead of deleting. Soak and clean with BBQ cleaner, Simple Green, or brake cleaner, then power-wash. One poster insisted, "No need to delete the system, the trucks run the same with or without! clean the passages... BBQ cleaner works best, soak everything, power wash, good as new!" r/Duramax
- Full Delete + Tune: For long-term avoidance of EGR problems and easier maintenance, deleting the EGR and tuning is the common route. As one owner put it, "Delete and tune… get a foxwell gt60 $300 and does a lot…" r/Duramax. A tune is what keeps the PCM good after the cooler is gone.
- Replace Up-Pipe / Remove EGR Hardware: If you remove the EGR, replace the up-pipe — its bellows can crack if you leave the old one. Advice was blunt: "If you remove egr, replace uppipe as well. It's highly likely the bellows will eventually crack if you just do blocker plates." r/Duramax

Since the EGR ties into the up-pipe and intake, take your time with the heat-shielded fasteners and label every plug you disconnect. A tune must be loaded beforehand so the PCM stops looking for EGR flow.
Practical Notes & Risks
- Electrical / Plugs: After deletion, terminate or cap the connectors properly (dummy plugs, heat-shrink, silicone, dielectric grease). One owner said..."I go with dummy plugs or heat shrink to protect from the elements." r/Duramax
- Legal / Emissions: Deleting is common but not legal in many places; owners note regional legality varies. As one put it..."Depends entirely on what part of the US you're in. Dont expect anybody on the internet to tell you where you can get your truck deleted..." r/Duramax
- When To Remove vs Leave In: Some leave the EGR physically in place after a software delete; others remove it for easier future work and to avoid coolant leaks. One owner said..."Remove, makes other things down the line easier. Like turbo work or If I decide to swap the injection pump." Another said..."Just left mine for now. It doesn't bother me knowings it's there." r/Duramax / r/Duramax
